The NCAA has rejected Oklahoma State's appeal and has banned its men's basketball program from the postseason, the school confirmed on Wednesday. Oklahoma State was appealing Level I penalties levied by the NCAA after an investigation stemming from the FBI's probe into bribery and corruption in college basketball recruiting. Oklahoma State is the first school to be banned from the postseason as a result of the FBI's investigation.
The decision comes six days before the team's regular-season opener. Oklahoma State immediately announced plans to file an appeal, and the program competed in the NCAA Tournament — advancing to the second round — while the status of its appeal was pending.
In its appeal, Oklahoma State argued its case should not have been filed at the same level as Evans' case Level I because Evans' conduct "did not provide any advantages or benefits" to the school. The NCAA appeals committee still upheld the Level I designation, and the penalties, noting that "NCAA members have established that control and responsibility for conduct in college sports rests with a school. In a news release , Oklahoma State called the upheld penalties "believed to be a decision unprecedented in the history of the NCAA.
Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton called the penalties "the greatest disappointment in my career as a head coach. Evans was one of four assistant coaches arrested as part of the investigation, along with coaches from Arizona, Auburn and USC. Evans was fired by OSU on Sept.
Boynton has built one of the most surprising and dangerous teams in the country.
