I am an administrative assistant who wants a career change and I am very interested in going back to school to become a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher. Are there programs in Pittsburgh that I can obtain my teaching certificate without going back to get my undergrad degree? I already have a Bachelors degree and would hate to go back and get another one.
Or are there any schools that offer this degree in the grad level? Some states have alternative routes to education to help with the shortage areas. If you click on "search" you can search by state to find your specific state's alternative route to teacher licensure program.
Sarah, I don't want to discourage you…but…. I also live in the Pittsburgh area and was a career changer who got a teaching degree….. It has been two years and I cannot find a permanent position to save my life…. I have held several long term FCS sub positions and have great references from principals, but that is all.
The job market for teachers in Pittsburgh is beyond terrible. I do not want to discourage you from pursuing your dreams but I wish someone had given me the straight story before I went back to school and incurred loans which I now struggle to pay because I can't find a permanent position. Good Luck! Is it possible to get a job in the middle of the school year as a FACS teacher?
