Her mother apparently scared off every suitor Edie ever had for fear that she would one day be left alone with no one to care for her. From to she lived at the Barbizon Hotel for Women, one of the earliest residential housing alternatives for young women moving to New York City to take advantage of professional opportunities.
Codes of conduct and dress were enforced, no men were allowed above the lobby floor, and prospective tenants needed three letters of recommendation to be considered residency. Max Gordon, the successful Broadway producer, saw potential in Edie and invited her to audition for the Theatre Guild that summer.
To her dismay, she was forced to return to Grey Gardens before that chance came; her mother could no longer afford to send her grocery money and Edie had no legitimate way of supporting herself. In the early s, Edie's father moved the family into a new summer home called Grey Gardens, a spectacular room mansion with water views.
Like her mother, a creative type who harbored dreams of becoming a singer, Beale had artistic yearnings. At the age of 9 a poem of hers was published in a local New York magazine, spawning a desire to become a writer. Yet her real love, despite her father's deep objections, was for the stage — something that was almost certainly fueled by her relationship with her mother. At the age of 11, Beale was taken out of school for two years by her mother for what was described as a respiratory illness.
Instead of class work, Little Edie tagged along to the movies or the theater with her mother nearly everyday. Blonde, blue-eyed and tall, Beale was a beauty, "surpassing even the dark charm of Jacqueline," recalled her cousin, John H. In , the same year she attended Miss Porter's finishing school in Farmington, Connecticut, Beale modeled for Macy's. She participated in fashion shows in East Hampton, too, and by her early 20s Edie Beale had earned the nickname, "Body Beautiful.

She got back to New York and then it was party time. She was a celebrity. She went out almost every night. She slept on a cot. She had a huge seascape above this cot with parasols at the foot and at the head. I can't go to the beach. The men come out and haunt me so I've made my own beach. Bartram remembers a woman with a lively social life. I always had the feeling that Little Edie had a little bit of jealousy about that.
Edie left New York with, some friends hinted, a bit of encouragement from the Onassis camp after only a few years, making her way to Ormond Beach, Florida. She had gone in search of a glamourized vision of Florida where she could indulge her love of swimming, but she found herself far from Palm Beach and in less than welcoming waters.
Meyer saw a real optimism and survival instinct in these moves. I think she was sort of the opposite of a depressive. She always seemed to have a fair amount of energy, and sometimes it was spent very well and sometimes, like the rest of us, it wasn't. Miami was a natural fit for Edie. She lived in a series of different buildings and found plenty of places to swim. Her life developed a predictable routine. She would befriend the staff and she would find somebody on her floor who would take her places, grocery shopping.
She reconnected with her old friend Lee Schrager, who now owned a gay bar on the beach called Torpedo. They held several Grey Gardens nights where the movie would be screened for a crowd, followed by a performance by Edie. I actually think they stopped because she told me that one of her relatives told her she couldn't do it anymore. Despite the familial tension—and her years of isolation—Edie was adept at keeping in touch, sending letters and making regular calls to her friends and relatives after leaving New York.
She became convinced that the deaths of her brothers and Jackie Onassis, which occurred over a short period of time, suggested a conspiracy.
