How does spamassassin work

How can I do that? I advise contact our Live Support team since the behavior you describe is not normal. Support will be able to log in and replicate the problem if it is replicable. Is SpamAssassin necessary for accounts that do not use Webmail?

For instance, I have several WordPress sites that send emails via forms, clients whose DNS runs through the server, but everyone is using a remote MX … I have always wondered what benefit SA provided in this scenerio.

SpamAssassin can be a good tool for any address receiving email spam only if the email is hosted on the same server. If you are using a remote MX record hosted elsewhere you should see if that server has SpamAssassin or something similar.

Have to admit that spam assassin has always confused me. I have several email addresses. Looks like assassin is set up only once for a domain name- not for each address. Is that correct? If so, then is it true where is the spam folder created? I have had some mystery missing emails forever and just figured out that I was probably trashing them with SA.

It is difficult to test as one cannot send self spam to see what happens! I can understand your confusion. SpamAssassin, although it can be VERY helpful, I agree, can also be difficult to tweak the configuration efficiently without being able to test things. I recommend using the RoundCube Webmail Application as it tends to work better with syncing the spam folder on all your devices as well.

As you monitor your Inbox and Spam folder, you can lower or raise the score. I hope this helps! I wish they were offered as plugins for the reseller WHM! I use SpamAssassin but get an insurmountable amount of spam on two of my email addresses. How can I stop spam from eating up all my quota?? Sharpsburgian, spam email will only count against your quota if your a subsequently forwarding email to another account.

This then counts the new message as a sent email for your account. You would need to disable your email forwarders to prevent this from counting as your sent mail. Alternatively, you may wish to review, and possibly implement our new SpamExperts service. Can you tell me how. I configured spam assasin and brought the number way down, but I think I may have missed some emails. They simply have sa-learn installed locally and you can then run cron jobs to handle the training. Is there no option for installing sa-learn locally?

Sorry for the difference in policy with SpamAssassin. Part of the reason with the Spamassassin self-learning not activated has to do with the performance of the server. You can always manually use filters to stop many of the issues as well, but I can understand the convenience of the self-learning system.

There is also a replacement system for the departing McAffee option to filter spam called SpamExperts. This is a paid solution, but it another solution that can be used to help stop spam from hitting your email account. For items that got flagged as spam incorrectly… is adding it to the whitelist the only way to fix that? It is the best way to do it through the cPanel. Is there a way to keep SpamAssassin from modifying the subject line of emails it determines to be spam? I can use the other items in the header i.

X-Spam-Status to filter spam emails using my email client but on occasion I do receive emails marked as spam that are not. For these emails I can add rules in my email client to catch them but SpamAssassin has already modified the subject line which makes them more difficult to organize.

Thanks for your help. If you have a VPS or Dedicated server, you may be able to adjust the rewrite, or add header. If you are not seeing it, then we can look into the issue, but we need more information about your account if you are an InMotion customer.

We would need the mail account information as well. I do not know about other forms of hosting, however. I have been told that you can run sa-learn from the command line IF you have shell access on your account, but you have to have a VPS account or higher.

Is it possible to run sa-learn from the command line? Thank you for contacting us. While, we do not have system like that in place, you definitely have the ability to set it up, or configure it. If you are having trouble, or have a specific question about Spam Assassin, we would be happy to help you.

While version may vary slightly from server to server, it appears that we are using SpamAssassin 3. Good news it stopped everything. If it is a human and they reply to the challenge email they get an email telling them that they are on the whitelist and can now send an email. How do I turn off the challenge part? That sounds like you still have the BoxTrapper still running. Disabling that will stop the challenge emails from being sent.

Thank you for your email spam box question. Thanks for the comment. Otherwise, you may not be receiving any spam into your account. I am getting lot fo junk email as zip files? On shared hosting accounts, it is not possible to filter zip files, however, on a VPS or dedicated server, ClamAV can be set up which will scan and remove unwanted zip files. Thank you for your comment. SpamAssassin uses a default threshold of 5, as per their Official Documentation. You can always change your SpamAssassin settings in cPanel at any time.

If you are following a specific guide, we would be happy to take a look? Can you provide a link to the guide? When SpamAssassin identifies any spam, it will automatically place the word spam within the subject line. Get web hosting from a company that is here to help. Sign up today! Community Blog. We suggest testing the different settings prior to using a higher setting. Under the Email section, click on the Spam Filters icon.

X-Spam-Score This is the numerical value assigned to the email by SpamAssassin based on its rating the email to be possible spam. Generally, the higher the number, the more that it is considered spam. Every incoming email will now be scanned. You may notice in the messages header of the email that an additional section appears like the following:. To understand how spam is classified, you must understand how spam is tagged.

Each email is evaluated based on a number of criteria. Some of the criteria will depend on what IP address you are sending from to determine if it is blacklisted on some Spam Blacklists , or whether or not the content appears to have certain words that are specific to spam. Spam Assassin allocates points based on its own algorithm. The total of these points will give you the spam score for that email.

Now that you understand how the scoring works, you may be presented with some options such as "Spamassassin tag score" or "Hits required for spam" or "Spamassassin refuse score". How this works is as follows:. Therefore, the lower this number, the more sensitive your filter becomes. Sensitivity ranges are from 2 to Initially, you should select a setting somewhere in the middle If you recieve a large amount of spam emails, you should make your filter slightly more sensitive closer to 5 , while if you only recive a few spams, you should set your sensitivity closer to 7 or 8.

It is a good idea to frequently adjust your filter sensitivity until you find the perfect fit. This is just an easy way to identify which mails are flagged by the system. SpamAssassin combines message format validation, content-filtering, and the ability to consult network-based blacklists. Filtering systems require little user intervention and introduce little delay into the process of sending and receiving email. There are other approaches to preventing spam, each of which comes with its own advantages and disadvantages and many of which can be used in addition to, as well as in place of, SpamAssassin.

The senders must reply to the challenge in some fashion that verifies their email addresses and generally speaking proves that they are human beings, rather than an automated bulk mail program the response.

After a successful response, the system allows messages from the sender to be accepted, rather than holding them. In greylisting systems, the mail server initially returns a temporary SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol failure code to messages from new senders or sending systems.

If the sending system attempts to resend the message after a reasonable time period, the mail server accepts the message and subsequent messages from the sending host. Because spammers are likely either to treat the temporary failure as a permanent failure, or to attempt to deliver messages continually during the greylisting time period, their messages are not received.

In time-limited address systems, users generate unique variations of their email address to include in different web forms, email messages, newsgroup postings, etc. Addresses may be valid only for a limited time or may be valid until revoked by the user. In these systems, if a user receives spam at one of his addresses, he can usually identify the company that spammed him or sold his address to a spammer , and he can quickly invalidate the address to prevent further spam. In micropayment systems, senders must pay a small fee for each message they send, making large-scale spam runs costly.

In some of these systems, the micropayment is refunded when the recipient determines that the message is in fact non-spam. SpamAssassin 3. At heart, SpamAssassin is a set of modules written in the Perl programming language, along with a Perl script that accepts a message on standard input and checks it using the modules. For higher-performance applications, SpamAssassin also includes a daemonized version of the spam-checker and a client program in C that can accept a message on standard input and check it with the daemon.

The per-user configuration can also be stored in an SQL database. There are several ways that this can be done.

Figure shows a typical mail transmission. Users may log into the system and read their mail directly from their mailboxes as is typical on multiuser Unix systems , or, if the system runs the appropriate servers, users may download their mail using a mail client that supports the POP Post Office Protocol or IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol protocols.

Each has advantages and disadvantages. Spam-checking is one kind of filtering that can be usefully performed at the MTA; virus-checking is another. In many cases, sophisticated filtering daemons have been developed for specific MTAs, and these daemons are capable of calling SpamAssassin to perform spam checks. Because all email destined for users on the system must pass through the MTA, it is a natural place for centralized spam-checking. If you run a gateway MTA that delivers mail to several internal systems, you can perform spam-checking at the gateway MTA to limit the amount of spam that any internal server will receive.

In addition to tagging messages that appear to be spam, MTA-based filters can often take other actions, such as blocking a message either refusing to complete the SMTP transaction or discarding it after the SMTP transaction has taken place or redirecting it to quarantine area.

If the MTA is already running a filtering system to do virus-checking, spam-checking can usually be performed by the same filter and share some of the overhead associated with filtering. A disadvantage of scanning at the MTA alone is that the MTA filtering system may not be able to access per-user preferences for scanning if the filter does not have access to the recipient information, if the recipient is at another host, or if the message is destined for multiple users on the same system.

On many Unix systems, the mail delivery agent is procmail, which can submit messages to SpamAssassin and act on the results. This is the most typical way that SpamAssassin is installed alone, as it does not require any MTA-specific filter interfaces.
